Another local COVID-19 death as number of new cases spike in tri-county area

Another local resident has died of COVID-19 as new cases of the deadly virus spiked in the tri-county area.

The latest fatality was a resident of Lake County. The victim was identified Tuesday by the Florida Department of Health as a 72-year-old woman who tested positive Oct. 3.

Lake County is now reporting 8,851 cases – an increase of 66 from Monday to Tuesday – among 4,080 men, 4,603 women, 60 non-residents and 108 people listed as unknown. A total of 711 cases have been reported in long-term care centers and 275 in correctional facilities. There have been 228 deaths and 740 people treated in area hospitals.

Leesburg is reporting 1,463 cases – an increase of 10 in a 24-hour period. Others have been identified in Clermont (2,220), Tavares (793), Eustis (710), Mount Dora (674), Groveland (610), Lady Lake (388), Minneola (237), Mascotte (234), Fruitland Park (198), Sorrento (192), Umatilla (180), Montverde (136), Grand Island (92), Howey-in-the-Hills (65), Astatula (64), The Villages (42), Astor (41), Altoona (39), Paisley (35), Yalaha (33), Okahumpka (18), Ferndale (5) and Mount Plymouth (3).

TRI-COUNTY AREA

  • Cases: 22,890 – increase of 140
  • Men: 10,286
  • Women: 12,380
  • Non-residents: 97
  • People listed as unknown: 127
  • Deaths: 665
  • Hospitalizations: 2,106

SUMTER COUNTY

  • Cases: 2,991 – increase of 24
  • Men: 1,691
  • Women: 1,274
  • Non-residents: 13
  • People listed as unknown: 13
  • Cases in long-term care facilities: 210
  • Cases in correctional facilities: 776
  • Deaths: 86
  • Hospitalizations: 291
  • Area/cities with most cases: The Villages (796), Coleman (688), Wildwood (470), Bushnell (352, 133 of which are at the Sumter Correctional Institution among 90 inmates and 43 staff members) and Oxford (150). The federal prison in Coleman also is reporting 117 cases among 16 inmates and 101 staff members.

MARION COUNTY

  • Cases: 11,048 – increase of 50
  • Men: 4,515
  • Women: 6,503
  • Non-residents: 24
  • People listed as unknown: 6
  • Cases in long-term care facilities: 1,100
  • Cases in correctional facilities: 2,247
  • Deaths: 351
  • Hospitalizations: 1,075
  • Cities with most cases: Ocala (8,368), Summerfield (452), Belleview (403), Dunnellon (390) and Citra (198). The Villages is reporting seven cases. A total of 1,425 cases have been reported among inmates (1,318) and staff members (107) at Lowell Correctional Institution and Marion Correctional Institution.

All told, Florida is reporting 816,700 COVID-19 cases – an increase of 4,637 from Monday to Tuesday. Of those, 805,924 are residents. A total of 51,422 cases have been reported in long-term care centers and 24,463 in correctional facilities. Across the state, there have been 17,099 deaths and 49,715 people have been hospitalized.
