5 more local COVID-19 deaths but only 40 new cases in tri-county area

Five more local residents have died from COVID-19 but reports of new cases in the tri-county area slowed considerably on Monday.

All five of the fatalities lived in Marion County. They were described Monday by the Florida Department of Health as:

  • 97-year-old woman who tested positive Aug. 27;
  • 72-year-old man who tested positive Sept. 2;
  • 93-year-old man who tested positive Sept. 5;
  • 86-year-old woman who tested positive Sept. 9; and
  • 78-year-old man who tested positive Spt. 13.

Lake County is now reporting 7,063 cases – an increase of 17 from Sunday to Monday – among 3,265 men, 3,616 women, 47 non-residents and 135 people listed as unknown. A total of 513 cases have been reported in long-term care centers and 165 in correctional facilities. There have been 147 deaths and 503 people treated in area hospitals.

Leesburg is reporting 1,164 cases – an increase of 13 in a 24-hour period. Others have been reported in Clermont (1,762), Tavares (723), Eustis (557), Mount Dora (549), Groveland (490), Lady Lake (272), Mascotte (227), Minneola (200), Sorrento (160), Umatilla (144), Fruitland Park (141), Montverde (108), Grand Island (72), Astatula (56), Howey-in-the-Hills (45), Yalaha (32), Astor (30), The Villages (29), Altoona (26), Paisley (26), Okahumpka (16), Ferndale (5) and Mount Plymouth (3).

TRI-COUNTY AREA

  • Cases: 18,335 – increase of 40
  • Men: 8,018
  • Women: 10,040
  • Non-residents: 73
  • People listed as unknown: 204
  • Deaths: 455
  • Hospitalizations: 1,609

SUMTER COUNTY

  • Cases: 2,107 – increase of 4
  • Men: 1,105
  • Women: 980
  • Non-residents: 9
  • People listed as unknown: 13
  • Cases in long-term care facilities: 193
  • Cases in correctional facilities: 467
  • Deaths: 60
  • Hospitalizations: 234
  • Area/cities with most cases: The Villages (545), Wildwood (397), Coleman (377), Bushnell (282, 137 of which are at the Sumter Correctional Institution among 103 inmates and 34 staff members) and Oxford. The federal prison in Coleman also is reporting 323 cases among 220 inmates and 103 staff members.

MARION COUNTY

  • Cases: 9,165 – increase of 19
  • Men: 3,648
  • Women: 5,444
  • Non-residents: 17
  • People listed as unknown: 56
  • Cases in long-term care facilities: 918
  • Cases in correctional facilities: 2,209
  • Deaths: 248
  • Hospitalizations: 872
  • Cities with most cases: Ocala (7,178), Summerfield (356), Belleview (336), Dunnellon (303) and Citra (173). The Villages is reporting five cases. A total of 1,416 cases have been reported among inmates (1,317) and staff members (99) at Lowell Correctional Institution and Marion Correctional Institution.

All told, Florida is reporting 665,730 COVID-19 cases – an increase of 1,736 from Sunday to Monday. Of those, 658,203 are residents. A total of 43,612 cases have been reported in long-term care centers and 21,639 in correctional facilities. Across the state, there have been 12,800 deaths and 41,374 people have been hospitalized across the Sunshine State.
