Area residents urged to use utmost caution with New Year’s Eve fireworks

With New Year’s Eve quickly approaching, area fire officials are urging residents to make safety a top priority when celebrating.

The National Council on Fireworks Safety is advising people to avoid consumer fireworks and instead enjoy public displays conducted by professionals. But those who choose to light off legal fireworks are advised to:

  • Only use fireworks outdoors free of overhead obstructions and away from dry grass or other flammable materials.
  • Obey all local laws regarding the use of fireworks.
  • Never give fireworks to young children.
  • Wear safety glasses when shooting fireworks.
  • Always have a bucket of water and charged water hose nearby.
  • Dispose of spent product by wetting it down and placing it in a metal trash can away from any building or combustible materials until morning.
  • Never mix fireworks and alcohol.
