Motorcyclist from Michigan dies after crashing into pickup on County Road 44

A motorcyclist from Michigan died after crashing into a pickup truck Friday afternoon on County Road 44 at Cypress Drive in Lake County.

Donald Vandonkelaar, 65, of Fruitport, Mich. had been riding a 2006 Harley-Davidson at 4:20 p.m. traveling eastbound when his motorcycle crashed into the rear of a 2001 Chevy pickup driven by 44-year-old Melody Lewis of Leesburg, according to an accident report from the Florida Highway Patrol. She had stopped to make a left-hand turn.

Vandonkelaar, who had not been wearing a helmet, was ejected from his motorcycle.

He was transported by ambulance to Waterman Hospital, where he later died of his injuries. Lewis was not injured.

The crash remains under investigation.
